Sometimes along life’s path I meet a person who looks a lot like me when I was younger. I’m not referring to a physical resemblance but, rather, the similarity in their personal behaviors or choices that fail to reflect those of Jesus.
These types of encounters are good reminders of the changes accomplished within me since becoming a Christ follower and are also testimony of the work God continues to do in my heart and life. Do you remember what it was like to live separated from God?
In Ephesians 2:11-12 Paul prompts Gentile believers to remember what their lives were like prior to knowing Jesus. They were separated from Christ, foreigners to the promises of God and without hope.
Reflecting on our old way of life should cause us to:
- Praise God for His unmerited gift of grace for those who believe
- Thank Him for His indwelling Holy Spirit and the work it is accomplishing in our lives
- Strive to faithfully pursue personal righteousness
- Be motivated to influence the lives of others for Christ’s kingdom
Ephesians 2:13 tells us: But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. Do you remember the day you heard about the shed blood of Jesus for your salvation? Do you remember the day you accepted His gift of grace? Does your lifestyle reflect your gratitude to Jesus? Do you remember the last time you shared the truth of Jesus with someone?
